The story

Paraphrase of Mark 4:35-41, not a quotation

One evening Jesus and his disciples set out in a boat to go over to the other side of the sea. A big wind storm came up, and the waves beat into the boat until it was filling with water. Jesus was asleep on a cushion at the back of the boat. The disciples woke him and asked if he cared that they were dying. Jesus rebuked the wind and spoke to the sea, the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them why they were so afraid, and they wondered who he could be, since even the wind and the sea obey him.

From the Bible

Bible quotation, word for word
“Peace! Be still!”
Mark 4:39 (WEB, World English Bible)
Bible quotation, word for word
“Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Mark 4:41 (WEB, World English Bible)

The passage’s point: The passage ends with the disciples’ own question: who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? (Mark 4:41). The story shows Jesus’ power over the wind and the sea.

Application for families: When we feel afraid, we can bring our fears to Jesus.

Read it in your Bible: Mark 4:35-41. Quotations on this page and in the video are from the World English Bible (WEB), which is in the public domain. The rest of the narration is a child-friendly paraphrase.

Talk about it

  1. Where was Jesus when the storm began? What was he doing?
  2. How do you think the disciples felt when the boat was filling with water?
  3. What did Jesus say to the wind and the sea? What happened next?
  4. The disciples asked, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:41). What does this story show us about Jesus?
  5. What can you do when you feel afraid?

Try this together

Make a storm together: rub hands for wind, pat knees for rain, stomp for thunder. When the leader says “Peace! Be still!” (Mark 4:39), everyone freezes and is quiet.

A short prayer

A prayer for families (not a Bible quotation)

Dear Jesus, thank you that you are with us when we are afraid. Help us to trust you. Amen.
